Twelve people, mostly factory and construction workers, fell ill and were hospitalized after eating mushrooms in barangay Cotcot, Liloan town, Cebu.

Barangay midwife Diosdada Noval said the victims ate wild mushrooms for dinner on Wednesday night and later complained of stomachaches and started vomiting.

The mushrooms were found in the backyard of the factory where the victims worked. Nelia Tecson, who also fell ill, cooked the mushrooms.

Apparently, they had eaten a non-edible variety of mushrooms.

Other victims were identified as Rosita Gomez, Mario Capol, Elemar Gunong, Matias Sangrano, Gerardo Lauro, Romeo Ogayon Sr., Romeo Ogayon Jr., Mary Ann Irog-irog, Ulysses Tundag, Ryan Monseler and a nine-year-old boy.

The victims were brought to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.

Gomez, Tecson and Capol were stay-in workers of JIP Plastic Trader in the barangay, while Gunong, Sangrano, Lauro and the Ogayons were construction workers.

All were discharged later except for Gunong and Sangrano according to Dr. Francisco de la Cuesta, health officer of Liloan town.

He said it?s risky to eat wild mushrooms and that people should only cook and eat cultured mushrooms.
