CEBU CITY, Philippines - A policeman shot and injured two men, who allegedly went on a shooting spree in a public cemetery in Barangay (village) Taytay, Danao City, northern Cebu, at dawn Sunday.
Police Officer 3 Rochelle Arquiza, assigned at the Regional Intelligence Office of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7), will be facing an investigation to determine if it was a legitimate operation when he shot Marc Juda Ramonida, 24, and Junrie Bentoy, 18, both residents of the barangay.
According to Senior Police Officer 4 Edgar Gomez of Danao police, Arquiza and some barangay tanods (village security officers) were assigned inside the Taytay cemetery during the observance of the All Saints' Day.
At about 1:30 a.m., burst of gunfire erupted inside the cemetery.
When Arquiza and the tanods checked where the gunfire came from, they saw Ramonida allegedly holding a handgun.
Arquiza allegedly shot Ramonida and hit him in the right side of the body.
Moments later, another burst of gunfire erupted and an armed Bentoy appeared before Arquiza and the tanods.
Arquiza fired at Bentoy and hit him in the abdomen. The bullet exited in the back of Bentoy.
Ramonida and Bentoy were brought to the Danao City District Hospital before they were transferred to a hospital in Cebu City.
A .45 caliber pistol with six live bullets were allegedly recovered from Ramonida. A .357 revolver was also recovered from the place where Bentoy was shot. The police believed that the gun belonged to Bentoy.
If Ramonida and Gomez could not present pertaining documents, charges of illegal possession of firearms will be filed against them, the police said.
