CEBU CITY, Philippines - A truck's tire exploded along a road in Liloan town, north Cebu on Monday, causing a three-vehicle accident that killed a woman and injured four others.
A Nissan Frontier pickup truck collided with a motorcycle, which smashed a multicab on the road.
Josefina Durano was sitting at the backseat of the motorcycle driven by Lito Patigan, when the accident took place. Her left leg was severed. She was rushed to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) where she died a few hours later.
The driver was catapulted to the top of the multicab. He was given first aid before being rushed to the hospital for serious injuries.
Multicab passengers Vaughn Castillan and Eljeness Talingting suffered bruises and wounds in different parts of the body.
Those riding the pickup truck were unhurt. They were identified as Ivan Mumu, barangay (village) captain of Poblacion in Tabuelan and his father, Silvestre Mumu, Tabuelan municipal councilor.
The multicab was bound for Danao City while the Nissan Frontier was heading for Cebu City.
Police Officer 3 Namir Maglasang, Liloan traffic investigator, said pickup driver Ivan Mumu lost control of the steering wheel when one of the truck tires exploded. The truck swerved from the right lane to the left lane and collided with the motorcycle then hit the multicab.
Ivan Mumu was detained at the Liloan police station after charges of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple injuries and damage to property was filed against him.
He was released later in the day after his family posted bail of P30,000.
Police said the criminal case was not upgraded to reckless imprudence resulting to homicide since the victim did not die in the area but in the hospital.
The case will only be upgraded if the victim's family files charges against the driver. /With Correspondent Chris A. Ligan
