CEBU CITY, Philippines - A brother-in-law of a congressman was injured after he was shot by a robber on Monday night in Barangay (village) Canzaga, Consolacion town, northern Cebu.
Felomino Lumapas, 56, was shot in the chest after he tried to resist a robber who grabbed the bag of his wife, Gabriela Fua-Lumapas, sister of Siquijor Representative Orlando Fua.
Lumapas was brought to the Perpetual Soccour Hospital along Gorordo Avenue, Cebu City.
Felomino was declared out of danger, according to Senior Police Officer 2 Rizalino Aligno of Consolacion police station.
The couple had just closed their pharmacy near the Consolacion public market when the incident happened.
When the couple was about to leave, an armed man approached them and declared a hold up.
The robber poked a gun at the couple and grabbed Gabriela's bag, which contained about P70,000 cash.
The money was the earnings of the pharmacy, the police said.
Felomino tried to get back the bag of his wife when he was shot by the robber.
After shooting Felomino, the robber boarded a waiting red XRM motorcycle driven by another man.
Aligno said that it was the daily routine of the couple to bring their earnings after closing the store.
The establishment had no security guard.
Aligno advised establishment owners not to carry a huge amount of money and need to hire a security guard to avoid similar incidents from happening.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Central Visayas (CIDG-7) will help the Consolacion police in investigating the incident.
Congressman Fua asked direct assistance from the CIDG-Camp Crame, which ordered the CIDG-7 to immediately solve the robbery.
