Military and police personnel dug up the mortal remains of two men in a cave in Sudlon 1, Cebu City yesterday.

No names of of the victims, believed to have been killed 10 years ago, were provided.

The army?s Central Command (Centcom) Civil Relations Service officer Lt. Col. Oscar Lasangue said the discovery came after they received reports of mass graves of communist rebels in the mountain barangay.

He said residents of sitios Morga and Satuhan, in Sudlon 1 reported the presence of the bodies.

Two skulls and decomposed body parts were found but soldiers will be returning to look for more.

Redner Villeta, 30, a resident, led the soldiers and police to the site, where they also uncovered items believed to be personal belongings of the victims.

Villeta said he first saw the bodies in 1998 when he and some friends searched for bird?s nests.

Villeta said he told police that he found five remains in sitio Morga and that more than 30 bodies could be found in sitio Satuhan.

Centcom?s Lasangue said the bodies were part of a mass grave of former NPA rebels who roamed the area in the 1980s and were executed.

He said residents were hesitant to report the graves since they feared reprisal from the rebels.

The bodies were recovered by the 78th Infantry Battalion, the Cebu City police Mobile Group (CCMG) and Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO.

Lasangue said the former rebels may have been among those executed as part of the communist movement?s ?rectification? campaign in the 80s.

Lasangue said no more insurgents bother Sudlon 1 today. The human remains were taken to the Cebu City Crime Laboratory for examination.
