A man was charged with double murder before the provincial prosecutor's office on Tuesday for allegedly killing a woman and her one-year-old daughter in Argao town, Cebu, on June 30.
Mark Allen Anislagon was accused of hacking to death Jocelyn Rubia Gomez, who was seven months pregnant, inside her house. Her daughter Riza Jane, who would have turned two years old on Aug. 6, was found lifeless lying under a coconut tree around 20 meters downhill from their house.
Jocelyn's husband, Roel Gomez, said he just arrived from the Carbon public market in Cebu City, and was walking home in barangay Lengigon when he saw Anislagon coming out of their kitchen door about 5 a.m.
He said he recognized Anislagon, who was wearing a yellow basketball uniform, even from afar because they have been neighbors for two years.
The lights were out at home.
He called out to Jocelyn from the window but got no answer. He tried to open the door and to his surprise, it was unlocked.
Gomez said he proceeded to their bedroom and saw his wife lying on her back.
Her face was hacked and covered in blood. Their baby, Riza, was missing.
The police recovered an ax, smeared with blood, under the bed.
The police and barangay tanods went to Anislagon's house but he was not home. However, they found his basketball shirt and maong pants newly washed.
Gomez said he was usually out of town on Sundays for work and only returns in the morning of the next day. Gomez works as a helper at the market.
A week before the killing, Roel said he recalled Jocelyn telling him that while he was gone for work, Anislagon tried to break into their house because he wanted to sleep inside.
