BARELY a month after the rob-slay of graduating nursing student Ruby Jade Ruba, another student, this time of the University of the Visayas (UV), was killed after he resisted giving up his cell phone worth P20,000 to robbers in Liloan town, Cebu.

SPO1 Dennis Malinao, an investigator of the Liloan police station, said Lucky Mantuhac, 19, a second year college student and a member of the UV basketball varsity team, the UV Green Lancers, was shot in the head by one of the three men who tried to rob him on Friday night in barangay San Vicente.

However, UV Green Lancers coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug maintained that Lucky's last name was Pitogo.

Lucky was rushed to the hospital in Cebu City but did not get there alive.

Lucky and his 16-year-old companion went biking about 9:30 p.m. when he decided to stop in a dark area to send a message on his cellphone.

While Lucky was texting, a motorcycle with three men on board stopped by them. Two of the men disembarked, pointed a gun at Lucky and declared a holdup.

When Lucky tried to resist, one of the robbers shot him.

"He was robbed twice already so he probably thought to himself that this time he would resist because when he was robbed last year, he just meekly gave up his cell phone," Malinao said.

Malinao said Lucky's companion, saw the student and the robbers grappling for the cell phone.

He said that he immediately ran for help but then he heard a burst of gunfire. When he looked back, he saw Lucky sprawled on the ground, while the suspects immediately fled the area.

The robbers were not able to take the cell phone as Lucky fell on top of it when he was shot.

Malinao said he will recommend to the barangay officials for lights to be installed in the area.

The police have not yet identified any suspects.

According to Malinao, he tried retracing the steps of the robbers and said they probably exited towards barangay Lamac in Consolacion town.

He said the robbers may come from Consolacion but operate in Liloan.

SPO1 Claudio Castro Jr., desk officer of Liloan police station, said robbery incidents happen in the area often but some of the victims do not report them to the police station.

"Almost everyday, we hear of someone being robbed, but victims do not report these incidents to us," Castro said.

Last March 6, Cebu Doctor's Hospital University student Ruba, was also killed when two men robbed her of her cell phone in Cebu City.

She was shot dead when she screamed for help.
