NAGA City ? The police and a representative of the United States embassy yesterday destroyed fake federal bank notes abandoned in Argao town, Cebu last October.
The burning of the fake notes, which appeared to be worth $3 trillion, was headed by Chief Supt. Ronald Roderos, director of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas and witnessed by Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Lito Ruiz and Rey delos Reyes, the US embassy representative.
The fake notes were left behind in a bronze trunk which was also burned in the kiln incinerator of Apo Cement in Naga City, Cebu.
Media coverage was limited to video footage and still photos of the burning.
In a press conference held after the burning, Roderos assured that all fake treasury bills were destroyed.
He said the police obtained complete copies of the evidence and documents for future reference and the ongoing investigation.
Almost four months after the discovery of the fake bank notes, police said they were unable to identify who had abandoned the trunk and the bank papers in Argao town.
Residents reported seeing a Caucasian man drive a red Mitsubishi Pajero to sitio Prenza in barangay Talaga where he dropped off the trunk in a banana grove by the highway before driving further south. Curious onlookers opened the trunk and found the bank notes. Correspondent Chito O. Aragon
