MANDAUE CITY, Philippines ? A factory worker, who sells ice buko on Sundays for extra income, was killed after he was hit by a motorcycle driven by a Canadian when he crossed the street on Sunday night in Mandaue City.
Tito Matugas, 49, died on the spot, leaving a wife and six children.
Matugas was on his way home when Samuel Allan Baker, 44, who drove a Honda XLR motorcycle, ran over him along M.C. Briones Street.
Danny Bañez, chief security officer of Barangay (village) Ibabao, said when his team arrived at the area, Matugas was sprawled lifeless on the road with Baker standing over him, seemingly looking puzzled.
Police Officer 1 Richard Suycano of Mandaue City Traffic said Baker was driving under the influence of alcohol.
The motorcycle's registration has not been renewed since 2004. It is owned by Marvin Lee Johnson, a friend of Baker.
Baker refused to talk further about himself and about the incident. He submitted himself for detention.
Ermilinda, Matugas' wife, said she tried to stop her husband from working that day as they had to attend a family meeting, but Matugas insisted.
He was supposed to join his family for dinner but never arrived home. They were later informed about the accident.
Matugas' family will file a case against the Canadian. /Correspondent Carine M. Asutilla
