WiMax gains foothold in Cebu

First Posted 08:51:00 03/19/2010

The WiMAX Internet connectivity technology first offered by Globe Telecom in the country has now gained the confidence of the once hesitant Cebu market, a company official said.

?We started offering the product middle of last year and starting August our subscriber based has already grown to almost 4,000 for the whole Central and Eastern Visayas, which is a good sign that people accept the new technology,? said Cleo Celeste C. Santos, regional sales head for Central Eastern Visayas consumer sales and after sales division of Globe. She spoke at the turnover ceremony of WiMAX Internet connectivity to six public elementary schools in Cebu City.

Santos added that out of that figure, 80-90 percent are Cebu subscribers, who were initially hesitant to try the product when Globe agents presented the new technology last year in a house-to-house sales campaign.

?Cebuanos were hesitant then because they didn't really know much about the technology and it's wireless and totally different from broadband wired services which is the most common offering in the market,? Santos said.

However, Santos said their first few customers were impressed once they experienced the service and through word-of-mouth the subscriber base has grown.

Because of the popularity of the service in the region, Globe Telecom will add 85 more WiMAX sites, which will be scattered all over the province.

?As of today, we have already installed 200 WiMAX sites here in Cebu, which are mostly concentrated in within Cebu City.?

Globe also has sites in Danao, Minglanilla, Talisay City and Carcar City, and hope to roll out more sites until the whole of Cebu is WiMAX-capable and ready.
