TWO power plants fell off the Visayas grid yesterday causing a 43 megawatt (MW) power shortage in the region. The power deficiency also caused power outages in Metro Cebu.
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) in a statement did not say why the new Cebu Energy Development Corporation's 82 MW power plant in Toledo City implemented an emergency shutdown.
Neither did the NGCP explain why Palinpinon 2, a generating plant operated by Green Core Geothermal Inc., also shutdown power.
The available capacity for the Visayas Grid yesterday was at 1,139 MW but the peak demand was at 1,182 MW.
CEDC?s coal-fired power plant was just inaugurated last week by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who assured that the power situation here in the Visayas has stabilized.
Ethel Natera, Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) spokesperson, said the power deficiency forced Veco to implement rotation brownouts in parts of Mandaue, Cebu, and Talisay cities. Correspondent Jhunnex Napallacan
