The dairy products in Cebu and Central Visayas are expected to increase this year with the arrival of 500 imported cows in July, says a dairy cooperative official.
Joseph Durado, the coordinator of the Cebu Federation of Dairy Cooperatives (CFDC), said last week that the CFDC dairy plant in Consolacion town in northern Cebu could still produce an average of more than 2,000 liters of cow's milk a day for Cebu, with 1,011 cows producing fresh milk.
Durado said for the entire Central Visayas 1,639 cows was expected to produce an average of 3,203 liters of milk for Central Visayas.
Durado said that the heat would cause cows to produce less milk, but the sites for the cows producing milk were located in mountain barangays with lower temperatures than other mountain barangays and has a steady supply of water, which is needed by the cows.
These areas include Dalaguete, Barili, Argao, and Naga City in the southern part of Cebu; Danao, Compostela, Liloan and Consolacion in northern Cebu.
There are also area in Cebu City, which include barangays Lusaran, Guba, Sirao, Adlaon, Tagbao and Paril.
If worse comes to worse, Durado said farmers could always transfer the cows in areas with trees that could shade the cows and they could spray them with water.
Durado said the farmers could also feed the cows with supplements high with protein that would help the cows produce more milk.
Farina Dy, public information officer of National Dairy Authority (NDA), said last week that on July, 500 imported cows from New Zealand would arrive and would be placed in the 100-hectare stock farm in Ubay, Bohol.
The cows with an average weight of 560 kilos is each worth P120,000.
Dy said that they would breed the cows first, produce calves.
These calves when old enough will be distributed to farmers' cooperatives or investors who want to invest in fresh cow's milk.
She said that they would only distribute the cows to the farmers cooperative or an investor who has the interest and capacity to take care of the animals.
