THE Department of Science and Technology in Central Visayas (DOST-7) and Science Education Institute announced that 1,023 out of the 24,339 high school students passed the nationwide Science and Technology scholarship exam given last Nov. 15.
One hundred of the passers came from Central Visayas.
Central Visayas gained 83 passers for the Merit scholarship, while another 17 passed the RA 7687 scholarship.
Also known as the Science Scholarship Act of 1994, Republic Act 7687 is the science scholarship program for the poor and the underpriviledged but deserving students.
On the other hand, Merit is a regular scholarship program in baccalaureate degree programs in specified courses open to qualified incoming college freshmen from the top five percent of the graduating high school class.
The scholars are entitled to free tuition and other school fees, book allowance, PE or NSTP uniform allowance, free transportation for one economy-class round trip fare for those studying outside their home province, monthly living allowance, group health and accident insurance and post-graduation clothing allowance.
The courses scholars should take include agriculture, agricultural chemistry, biochemistry, biology, ceramics engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, chemistry teaching, civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, electronics and communications engineering, environmental science, fisheries, food technology, geodetic engineering, geology, industrial engineering, information technology, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, mathematics, mathematics teaching, mechanical engineering, mining engineering, molecular biology and biotechnology, physics, physics teaching and statistics.
The scholars can enroll in the University of the Philippines, state universities and colleges or the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-recognized centers of excellence.
