THE change of company name of Sulpicio Lines Inc. won?t affect damage claims and criminal charges filed by families of victims in the 2008 sinking of th Princess of the Stars, said the Public Attorney's Office in Central Visayas (PAO -7).
?It?s just a name. Our clients should not worry. We can still go after them even if there is a change of name,? said PAO 7 Director Gree Calinawan.
Owners of Sulpicio Lines Inc. had the name changed to Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corp. which was approved by the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) last month.
Calinawan said PAO Chief Persida Acosta would explain more in detail during her visit to Cebu on Friday.
There are 53 cases filed with Cebu City courts in relation to the MV Princess of the Stars tragedy, where 800 lives were lost at sea.
SLI sought for the dismissal of the cases and had asked the court to order the complainants to pay docket fees but the PAO won't agree.
Calinawan said the complainants were ?indigent? clients and don?t have to pay court docket fees.
?They (SLI) must remember that when the victims died in the sea tragedy, their families lost income and can now be considered indigents,? Calinawan said.
