Instead of asking the Cebu City government to reconsider its decision on the proposed Light Railway Transit (LRT), Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu 1st district) should instead support the Cebu City government's proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System.
Engineer Nigel Paul Villarete, Cebu City Planning officer, challenged Gullas to study the BRT system.
Villarete said the City Council had been consistent with their stand that the BRT would be the best alternative mass transport system not only for Cebu City but also for Metro Cebu.
?It is the best public transportation for Metro Cebu and if other cities will agree then they can be included in the BRT routes,? Villarete said.
Villarete said the city government had studied both the LRT and BRT systems.
He pointed out that the BRT is cheaper and can cover more areas in Cebu than the LRT.
The BRT project is worth $75 million while the LRT project costs $603 million or at least P30 billion, which could only serve 19 km or the cities of Talisay, Cebu and Mandaue.
?With P30 billion, that would translate to 225 km of BRT routes and can cover the entire cities of Talisay, Cebu City, Mandaue and even Minglanilla, Cordova and Lapu-Lapu City and Consolacion. So why can't they reconsider their decision??asked Villarete.
He also said countries like Mexico, India, Columbia and China use BRT systems.
Cebu City Councilor Edgardo Labella also said that the LRT proposal was procedurally flawed because the Cebu City Council was not consulted about it.
