COKALIONG Shipping Lines Inc. has qualified to compete on the national level for the 1st MARINA Awards for Safe Travel, Excellence and Responsible Service or MASTERS.
Cokaliong won three major awards of the regional leg (Central Visayas) of the MASTERS.
It was chosen Vessel of the Year in the region, said Mardon Martin, supervising Maritime Industry (Marina) development specialist.
Cokaliong Shipping was also recognized as the Coastwise Domestic Shipping Company and got the Best Ship Master award which went to Master Mariner Saviniano E. Fuderanan of MV Filipinas Cebu.
Martin said Cokaliong Shipping Lines and MV Filipinas Cebu bested about 300 shipping companies in region 7 or at least 1,600 vessels.
The MASTERS is a project of Marina Administrator Elena Bautista.
It gives recognition to ship operators which are performing well and give good service to their passengers.
The regional winners were already endorsed by the Marina in Central Visayas board of judges to Bautista.
?For prestige, well, the award speaks for itself,? said Martin.
He said Cokaliong has a better chance of winning the national award because the criteria is the same as that for the regional level.
These include the safety records of the vessel, no violations of Marina rules and regulations, level of service to passengers and the age of the ships.
The awarding for regional winners will take place by the ast week of November or first week of December.
Regional winners will be competing for the national awards .
Awarding will be done within the year, said Martin.
There are nine award categories. Other awardees for region 7 are Roble Shipping, Inc. for the Ferry Domestic Shipping Company; Tsuneishi Heavy Industries for the Large Shipbuilder/ Ship repairer company; Fortune Shipworks, Inc. for Small and Medium Shipbuilder or Ship Repairer; Lusterio Boat Maker for Boatbuilder; and the University of Cebu ? Maritime Education and Training Center for the Maritime Training Center category.
