More lights urged for trade district

First Posted 07:48:00 10/27/2009

Business and commercial establishments in the Central Business District (CBD) of Cebu City will be mandated to put up lights at night under a proposal in the City Council.

An ordinance to this effect was passed on first reading in last week?s council session. The sponsor, Ccouncilor Rodrigo Abellanosa, said the measure was for public safety and tourism.

The council observed that sidewalks in business areas with establishments that are not well lighted become the favorite spots of criminals.

Lighting up business structures is also a way of beautifying the city and would encourage the influx of tourists and ultimately contribute to the city?s revenues, said Abellanosa.

In the draft ordinance, companies that violate the requirement will be warned on the first and second instances . They face the revocation of their business permit on the third offense.

No business permit shall be released, approved or renewed to an applicant without his complying with this ordinance, Abellanosa added.
