First Posted 11:18:00 10/08/2009

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will conduct a three-year tourism survey in Cebu to determine the island's tourism potentials and guide it in its policy directions.

Provincial Board Member Agnes Magpale, chairperson of the committee on tourism of the Provincial Board (PB), said that there are now efforts to promote Cebu as a destination especially for weddings and Korean honeymooners.

The development of ?Tourism Statistics System? will provide data that will aid the DOT and Local Government Units in developing its tourism policies and directions.

Magpale sponsored a resolution which the PB approved on Monday?s session, authorizing Gov. Gwen Garcia to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with DOT and JICA for the development of a tourism statistics system here.

?The project will benefit the provincial and municipal planning and tourism offices of Cebu, as well as the DOT national and regional offices through the conduct of trainings and mentoring sessions on tourism statistics and planning, marketing, investments, including the formulation of statistical and planning manuals,? said the proposed MOA.

Signatories of the proposed MOA are Governor Garcia, DOT Regional Director Patria Aurora Roa and JICA principal senior representative Hiroshi Togo.
