Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he is looking for investors to bring the famed MD Anderson Cancer Center to the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City.
The mayor said he already has a positive response from mogul Manuel ?Manny? Pangilinan about investing in the center.
Pangilinan has been investing in medical tourism and buying hospitals nationwide.
Osmeña said he will open talks with the management of the MD Anderson Cancer in Houston, Texas when he gets there for his medical checkup from July 4 to 6.
He said he will scout for foreign and domestic investors to firm up the deal.
The mayor said a world class cancer facility in Asia will bring in more tourists and interested investors to Cebu.
?The market is not only Cebu, and not only the Philippines but the market is on this side of the world (Asia). So we need Japanese, Korean, Thai, or Indian investors,? the mayor explained.
Since MD Anderson is owned by the Houston government, they could not invest outside of Texas.
?Our problem is not MD Anderson...I have a little problem with them but the main problem is our investors,? he said.
Osmeña said he asked help from Sen. Loren Legarda, chairperson of the Senate health committee to organize a meeting with the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), Department of Health (DOH), and other agencies concerned.
?This is the single biggest opportunity for the Philippines as far as medical tourism is concerned,? he told .
Osmeña said that since the facility is a cancer research institute, they can also help in validating alternative and herbal medicines and treatments for cancer.
