Cebu City, Philippines - Maritime Industry Authority chief Vicente Suazo resigned yesterday amid the Marina's unfinished investigation of whether to suspend the franchise of Sulpicio Lines Inc.
Suazo said he wanted to go back to the private sector and spend more time with his family in Cebu City.
With his resignation, Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Undersecretary Elena Bautista will serve as OIC in concurrent capacity.
Suazo, 61, who is from Ormoc City, denied reports that his departure was due to conflicts with the people in his agency or in the DOTC.
Suazo never mentioned any plans about resigning when he faced the media in Cebu during the MV Princess of the Stars sinking investigation in July.
At the time, he discussed his plans and programs to improve the shipping industry.
Suazon said he did not mention resignation plans because President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had not yet approved his resignation at that time.
He said President Arroyo granted his resignation last month.
Marina 7 Regional Director Glenn Cabañez expressed surprise at Suazo's resignation.
Cabañez said he was told to go to Manila Wednesday for the turnover ceremony at 10 a.m.
Suazo said he will focus his attention on private business and pursue a new role as consultant for shipping and ports.
Suazo served the Philippine Ports Authority and the Bureau of Customs before he became Marina chief.
Suazo said his resignation will not affect the Marina investigation of Sulpicio’s franchise.
He said the hearing panel is about to finish its investigation on the matter.
