Cebu City, Philippines – Rice prices in Cebu City are decreasing, said an official of the Grain Retailers Confederation of the Philippines (Grecon).

Erwin Goc-ong, vice president of Grecon and chairman of the Cebu Market Vendors Development Cooperative (Cemvedco), cited the arrival of the harvest season and the flooding of the market with cheaper export rice by the National Food Authority (NFA).

He said ganador could now be bought in the market at P42/kilo compared to P45/kilo last July.

Regular milled-rice is now P27/kilo from P35/kilo last month.

The price of corn also dropped by over P10/kilo compared to last month's price.

Goc-ong said the price of corn last month was at P40/kilo but now is P27/kilo. Yellow corn is between P20 to P21/kilo.

Goc-ong said the retail price of a sack of ganador rice now ranges from P2,030 to P2,050/sack compared to P2,200/sack last month.

The rice variety Sinandomeng is now P1,900 to P1,930/sack from P2,080 to P2,100/sack last month.

A sack of regular milled rice costs P1,350/sack from P1,500/sack last month. /Correspondent Jhunnex Napallacan
