CEBU CITY, Philippines - The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) has formed a business council with a Middle East counterpart to improve business relations between the two countries.

Eric Ng Mendoza, president of Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was appointed chairperson of the Philippine-Qatar Business Council.

He also represented the PCCI and witnessed the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI) on January 30.

“The MOU fosters the development and promotion of commercial exchanges and economic cooperation between respective members and the two countries,” he said.

Mendoza joined the Philippine delegation with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo when she visited Dubai on January 26 to 27 after attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

He said the MOU spells out the assistance each chamber will provide to one another to achieve “closer relations and collaborations” through information exchange, seminars, trade missions and exhibitions.

“These activities are expected to bring business opportunities to both countries,” he said.

QCCI chairman Khalifa Bin Jassim Bin Mohd Al-Thani and PCCI chairman Miguel Varela signed the MOU.

Mendoza said he hopes to recruit more members to the council especially those companies that target Qatar as a potential market for their businesses.
