The Ayala Center Cebu Cinema will be hosting Eigasai 2010, a Japanese Contemporary Film Festival from Aug. 3 to 8.
?This event is a very good chance for cultural exchange. We are privileged to watch other nations' cultures particularly Japan?s in relation to filmmaking,? said regular film festival movie viewer Prof. Ligaya Rabago of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas Cebu College.
The contemporary movies included in the filmfest are critically acclaimed.
?Always Sunset on Third Street 2? was nominated in almost every major category at the 2008 Japan Academy Awards.
?The Battery Future in our Hands? is directed by Takita Yojiro, the first Japanese director who won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009 for his other film Okuribito (Departures).
?Glasses? is directed by Ogigami Naoko, who was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Naoko won the Manfred Salzgeber Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2008.
?The Bandage Club,? which is directed by Tsutsumi Yukihiko, is based on an award-winning novel of the same title. The entire film was shot in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture.
?I Just Didn't Do It? was Japan's entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Academy Awards in 2007. The film is directed by Suo Masayuki.
Eigasai, which literally means ?film festival,? is on its 12th year of providing an opportunity for Filipinos to increase their understanding and enhance their reception of Japanese arts and culture through films. It also aims to improve the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan.
The event is part of Philippines-Japan Friendship Month celebration and is organized by the Japan Foundation Manila Office and the Consular Office of Japan in Cebu in cooperation with the Japanese Association of Cebu Inc. and Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Cebu Inc.
