THE Cebu City government distributed on Wednesday five spades and two wheelbarrows to each of the 31 mountain barangays.
The city's mountain barangays ? 17 from the north and 14 from the south ? received the equipment that they can use to clean canals, rivers and roads.
Teresita Tabal, barangay captain of Taptap, said they would use the equipment to unclog canals of waste materials including plastics.
Barangay captain Edelito Mabano of Kalunasan told CEBU DAILY NEWS that the equipment would be used to clean their river especially during the simultaneous cleanup of the Coastal Management Board.
Barangay captain Ramon Ylaya Jr. of Sinsin said they would use equipment in the cementing of road, which got a budget of P3.4 million from the city government.
Barangay captain Nieves Narra of Adlawon said the equipment will be used to clear the canals and to remove the trash.
Mayor Tomas Osmeña told reporters that the pieces of equipment are not designed for specific use, thus giving the mountain barangays a free hand of using the cleaning tools to whatever purpose.
