THE first School-on-the-Air (SOA) graduation program held recently marked the opening of the GMA rice activity in Siquijor province.
The graduation was held at the Provincial Agriculturist conference room in Larena town, Siquijor.
Some 38 rice farmers from the five municipalities of Siquijor graduated after listening to the early morning daily radio program aired over dyAR Radio Mindanao Network Sunshine Radio from Monday to Saturday, 4:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Rene Bucol, one of the graduates from barangay Catamboan, Larena said ?he learned many things during the airing of several topics, lectures he did not learn from seminars.?
?It was enjoyable since you only do it while doing your early morning chores at home,? he said.
The SOA started in September 2009 and was anchored by the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Agcomn staff in Cebu City headed by regional information officer Gracelen Dagala.
The program aimed to educate farmers on new and appropriate farming techniques and practices for specific crops and livestock.
Series of prepared lectures on different subject matters in farming were discussed.
Collaborating agencies of DA in Central Visayas, provincial and municipal local government units were behind the funding of the activities.
