‘Cantata’ concert to mark 100 years of ICM in Philippines

First Posted 07:20:00 11/07/2009

TWO new works will be performed by the students and guests of St. Theresa?s College (STC), Cebu to mark the 100 years of presence of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (ICM) in the Philippines.

Under the title ?Celebration: Two Cantatas? set to be presented at the STC auditorium, the concert premiers two new commissioned works by well known Cebuano composer, Fr. Rudy Villanueva, with choreography and technical assistance from the school?s faculty and staff.

The first part, simply titled ?Celebration,? follows the format of the Catholic Mass, its youthful music and movements meant to underscore the vigorous Christian instruction and social involvement of STC.

In the second portion, the focus is on Marie Louise de Meester, the woman who founded the ICM Sisters (formerly called the Canonesses of St. Augustine) and who brought the first company of her Sisters to the Philippines, particularly in Tagudin, Ilocos Sur.

From there radiated many foundations and involvements ? five in Cebu alone, including STC, St. Francis Academy in Balamban, St. Catherine Academy in Carcar and the Leprosarium in Consolacion town.

STC?s new Cantatas employ texts from the Mass and Scripture, and from words penned by the Founder herself and addressed to her young charges and to the whole world.

Although serious in concept, light-and-youthfulness characterizes the two theater-pieces, making them friendly to both junior and senior audiences.

Performances run from Dec. 4 to 6. For more details, one may contact 2533468 and 2536337 and look for Sherryl Abellanosa.
