Around 1,400 men and women joined the ’Moonwalk’ against breast cancer from the Cebu Business Park to the Asiatown IT Park last Oct. 3.

The turnout of participants in this year’s walk was bigger by 300 than last year’s.

The Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center’s Moonwalk, a program of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., promotes awareness of the dreaded disease through early detection, screenings and self-examination.

The walk is set every year during a full moon night in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month or “Pink October.”

Participants lit pink candles, illuminating the night with a thousand flames, at the culmination of the program at the IT Park.

Jane Pacaide, a cancer survivor and president of Cebu Cancer Fight Inc., gave a testimony of her fight against the disease, which she said “walay batasan (no respect)” since it attacks women of all ages and classes.

The 6th Moonwalk was participated in by the Rotary Club of Cebu Fuente, Kahayag Network of Cancer Support Groups Inc., various Cebu City barangays, medical colleges, non-government organizations, the Young Minds Academy alumni and other organizations, such as the Perpetual Succor Hospital-Cebu Cancer Institute and Mabolo Police Station.
