First Posted 11:33:00 10/08/2009

AROUND 60 unwed and non-working mothers and some husbands in the depressed areas of Mandaue City availed of the livelihood training program on candle making last Saturday at the National Shrine of Saint Joseph Parish.

The Daughters of Mary Immaculate Inc. (DMII) of Mandaue City sponsored the training conducted by personnel from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) and the Department of Manpower Development and Placement (DMDP).

Teresita Baguio, one of the trainers from DMDP, told Cebu Daily News that the participants had shown interest on candle making based on their output.

?Kanamong mga trainers daku na kayo namong kalipay kay first timer sila pero nindot na sila og produkto. Sa ato pa, nituhop gyud sa ilang alimpatakan ang among gitudlo (We, trainers, are very happy because the participants came up with a good product even though they are still new to the craft. This means they absorbed what we taught them),? said Baguio.

Rose Retuya, regent of DMII, said the livelihood training is part of their pro-life program for the upliftment of women workers in Mandaue City.

Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz gave P1,000 from her Priority Development Assistance Fund to the participants, who grouped themselves by five, as their initial capital for candle making.

Soon-Ruiz said she will ask the church to provide space outside where candle makers can display their products.
