MORE than 3,000 senior citizens from the 27 barangays in Mandaue City received two and a half kilos of rice each during their mid-year general assembly held recently at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.
“I am very happy for what the mayor has given. This is why I come,” Gaudencia Rio, 73, of barangay Banilad, said in Cebuano.
“I'm happy everytime I see you (senior citizens) because you remind me of my mother,” Mayor Jonas Cortes said during the opening program.
Cortes’ mother, Celestina “Narsing” Cabungcal Cortes, died of breast cancer at age 83 on last July 8 in Chong Hua Hospital.
Cortes, who is the youngest of the 14 siblings, said his mother did not even graduated in elementary but he was proud of her “because we are what we are now.”
One of the highlights of the assembly was the turnover of the newly purchased van as service vehicle of senior citizens.
