The US government will start interviewing World War II veterans in Cebu on February 24.
The US government is giving out a one-time lump-sum payment of $15,000 to Filipino war veterans living in the US and $9,000 for those based in the Philippines.
US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney said the interview was necessary to establish the authenticity of the claimants.
?We need to see them personally because we want to make sure the money goes to the right person. The lump sum payment involves a big amount of money,? Kenney added.
The amount that each World War II veteran can get is P432,000 based on the current exchange rate of P48 to a dollar.
The benefit is part of President Barack Obama's project under the Economic Stimulus Bill.
Kenney said they will go around the 15 cities in the country, including Cebu, to reach out to all the veterans who have difficulty travelling to the US Embassy in Manila to process their claims.
The US Embassy, Camp Aguinaldo in Manila and the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) camps and hospitals will be open for the verification process.
Kenney said a one-year period will be given to the veterans to file their claim application. /Reporter Marian Z. Codilla
