At least three community projects created through the efforts of the Association of Regional Executives of National Agencies (Arena), Cebu City government and a utility firm were turned over to the Muslim tribe in Barangay (village) Alaska-Mambaling, Cebu City.
The projects included the construction of a mosque, repair of footbridges and the soon to be completed open court and multi-purpose center.
The construction of the mosque was supported by the personal fund of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.
In August 2007, group of agencies headed by Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Felix Guanzon called for a community assembly to assess the conditions and the needs of the Muslim tribe.
Among the top problems identified were lesser opportunities for livelihood, poor housing conditions, lesser opportunities for education, inadequate medical and health programs, no electricity, no descent place for community activities and dilapidated footbridge, which is very dangerous for the residents especially the children living in the area.
The Arena, the Cebu City government and the Visayan Electric Company poured in their resources to fulfill their commitment for the Muslim village pilot project in Alaska-Mambaling.
The turnover ceremony was attended by Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Felix Guanzon, directors of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Office of Muslim Affairs (OMA) as well as the 53rd Engineering Brigade of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Central Visayas.
