The Lapu-Lapu City government will construct a cultural and historical museum early next year.

Rudy Villanobos, administration officer of the city's Tourism, Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission, on Thursday said that Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza wanted to have a museum as his legacy to the city.

The museum will house paintings, wood carvings, artifacts, native materials and previous costumes worn during the Kadaugan sa Mactan. the city's festival.

“If the project pushes through, the museum would be the first in the city,” Villa-nobos said.

“It is a must to have (a museum) to identify your culture. Knowledge of history is important to the people.”

Sunshine Alegre, administrative assistant of the commission, said the museum will help people know the life of Lapu-Lapu and his men.

Villanobos said the museum will probably be built next to the Liberty Shrine in barangay Mactan.

He said they will start “culture mapping” on the second week of November.

Each barangay of the city will be given questionnaires to find out if residents have old materials in their place that could be displayed in the city museum.

“Before the term of the mayor ends, the museum must already be built,” he said.

Villanobos said the commission has asked the help of architect Joy Onozawa of the National Historical Institute. However, he said the City Council has yet to appropriate a budget for the project.

The sponsors of the resolution are city councilors Damian Gomez, Florito Pozon, Rodolfo Potot, Junard Chan, Marcial Ycong, Eduardo Cuizon, and Queenie Malingin. Correspondent ADOR VINCENT MAYOL
