THE International Police (Interpol) and the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) announced the identification of 122nd victim of Typhoon Frank that killed an estimated 1,330 people, including the 820 passengers and crew of the sunken ferry MV Princess of the Stars.
The Disaster Victim Identification teams in Cebu City, composed of experts from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), ICMP and the Interpol, released the names of the newly-identified victims following the DNA-matching procedures at the ICMP.
The 34 new victims have brought the total number of DNA victims identified through the DNA-matching techniques to 122.
They are: Chona Paquibot Abelgas, Adoracion Llamedo Abellana, Helenita Umapas Aguipo, Evangeline Yase Alcantara, Vidal Andrade, Ferdinand Gidayawan Areglado, Solomon G. Balocos, Evelyn Bulawin Bardilas, Candido Oberes Cabalquinto Jr., Aluel Bartolini Cinco, Nancy Mantos Condrillon, Avelina Tiyok Dait, Librado Lagurin Diyzon Sr., Ryan Jeff Docuyanan, Alejo Buscato Encio, Bien Ahmet Locay-Locay Espina, Purisima Locay-Locay Espina, Lourdes Tocmo Garces, Lucia Gaudel, Jay C. Hoyohoy, Romulo Gucor Logroño Sr., Marissa Aguanta Maglasang, Cristy Marie Villarta Monterona, Neil Sinados Obiedo, Ronnie Montano Ostia, Lolita Oyao, Virginia Melano Punzalan, Maria Merle de la Cruz Risma, Rowena Rivera Romagos, Abner F. Sanchez, Leland Villamor Tambiga, Kert Christopher Aguilar Villanueva, Jesalyn Manubag Vitor and Hermenio Palalon Yurong.
“To have reached 100 DNA-assisted identifications is a significant milestone in terms of forensic achievements. More importantly it means that families who lost loved ones now have the opportunity to finally lay them to rest,” said Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble.
ICMP Director General Kathryne Bomberger said, “Through our identification efforts, including the use of DNA analysis, ICMP is strongly committed to bringing a sense of closure to all those families who lost their loved ones in this tragic event. We will continue to work closely with Interpol and the government of the Philippines in handling this difficult process.”
