In celebration of the Environment Month, youths from different parts of the country convened in Manila recently to attend the launching of Clean Air Youth Alliance (CAYA) at the SM North EDSA and creative planning workshop at the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) Center.

The launching was highlighted by the battle of bands dubbed “Baga’t Hangin Musikahan 2008.”

Bands from Metro Manila performed onstage to campaign for clean air and aim to formulate collective ways to address global warming.

The workshop facilitators, on the other hand, emphasized arts as an important tool in educating young minds.

“We can show our advocacies for cleaner air through artistic ways,” said Bong Billones, the program director of the School of People's Theater of PETA.

Innovative plans were presented during the workshop such as the clean air parade and smoke emission testing were also proposed.

“Cleaning the air is not just the task of environmentalists and scientists, but of everybody who is guided with a vision to have an environment-friendly country,” said Ray Goco of Energy and Clean Air Project.

The three-day activity also included a tour of public and private agencies advocating environmental sustainability.

Members of CAYA chapters from Baguio-Benguet, Cebu, Davao and Manila joined the event that was initiated by the Energy and Clean Air Project of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The CAYA Cebu chapter was represented by students from the University of the Philippines, University of San Carlos and the Cebu Institute of Technology.

CAYA is a loose ensemble composed of students, whose task is to promote clean air.

The activity culminated with the members chanting “CAYA natin ‘to!,” referring to clean air and energy conservation. /UP ComSci student Nasvin F. del Rosario
