THE Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. – Cultural Heritage Program conducted its symposium on “Cebu's/Cebu, Life from the Ground: Archaeology and Cultural Property” on April 23 at the Bryant George Hall, Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center.
Dr. Eusebio Dizon and Prof. Wilfredo Ronquillo, of the National Museum of the Philippines, talked about archaeology and its significance in the reconstruction of history before students, faculty, media and writers of the Cebu History Writing Project.
A presentation of artifacts, which were international in nature, was provided to prove that Cebu was once part of the booming trade industry in the pre-colonial period.
Furthermore, an illustration of the 13th -15th century trade routes showed that indeed foreign traders visited the island of Cebu.
As Professor Ronquillo mentioned, “What they (foreign traders) had, they shared. What they didn’t have, they asked for in exchange of what they had to offer…” and Cebu was fortunate enough to have witnessed such an interlinking of cultures.
Equipped with a growing abundance of material remains, it is only right that people learn to protect and preserve what they still have – exactly what Rafi hopes to see in the not so distant future.
