Pinamungajan town Mayor Geraldine Yapha is inviting all Cebuanos to witness the town’s first Pamuhuan Festival on May 4.

The festival is a cultural presentation showing the town’s abundant land and sea harvests through street dancing.

Pinamungajan high school students wearing colorful costumes will dance with their own Pamuhuan Festival dance steps.

A “Search for Miss Pamuhuan” will open the festival on May 3 at 8 p.m. at the town's auditorium.

The winner of the search will be declared as the first Pamuhuan Festival Queen during the search’s grand finals on May 4.

The festival will also showcase the natural wonders of Pinamungajan such as the white-sand beach of Campalabo Island, which is ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling; 118 caves for spelunking in barangays (villages) Lamac, Anopog and Sacsac; the Sinongkulan waterfalls of Barangay Lamac; and the 14 rice hills, which are similar to Bohol's Chocolate Hills, in Barangay Tupas.

Pinamungajan is Cebu province's largest coconut producer and one of southwest Cebu's agricultural towns.

The original name of Pinamungajan is pamuhuan, thus the festival is named Pamuhuan Festival.

According to Dolores Perez, pamuhuan is a compensation for some work done or accomplished.

She said people in Pinamungajan went to nearby barangays to help harvest farm products like corn, rice, camote or coconut. After the day’s work, they brought home pamunuan.

The festival is a celebration of the municipality's history as a farming community. It will showcase the past, present and future of Pinamungajan.

“We hope the festival will make more people aware of our town's many products and visit our many beautiful natural attractions in our coastal and mountain barangays,” Mayor Yapha said. /UP Intern Kimberly May Villacrucis
