A team of volunteers composed of 40 male high school students from Tak Sun Secondary School in Hong Kong and 16 students from the National Taiwan University came to Pinamungahan, Cebu to help build the Family Farm School on January 27 to February 1.
The 56 student volunteers were accompanied by two Catholic priests and two teachers. One of the teachers was Mike Ladao, a Filipino professor and Work Camp head coordinator from Tak Sun.
The other was Peter Herbert, a British professor from the National Taiwan University who is also a member of the Opus Dei.
A project of the Rosarian Society of the Holy Spirit headed by Nicholas Gentapa, the school will teach the students new technology and scientific techniques on farming.
Ladao said the visit of the Chinese volunteers was in line with Tak Sun's annual week experience or work camp program, an extra-curricular component of Tak Sun's curriculum that allows the students to go out of the school environment and discover a different learning experience in their chosen community.
Every year in the last five years, the Chinese students visited different remote areas in the Philippines to render voluntary works.
This year, they chose the Rosarian Movement as their beneficiary.
The work camp program was organized by the University Center Foundation (UCF) in Manila, a private organization of professionals that sets up study centers, physical structures and programs to provide the youth with complementary opportunities for human development, professional preparation and direct service to society.
UCF also holds outreach activities to help promote the educational system in the country, especially in remote areas.
