Around 700 individuals participated in the launching of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) held at the Labangon Sports Complex and Labangon Elementary School Gym in Barangay (village) Labangon, Cebu City on February 23 and March 9.

Labangon was one of the pilot areas for the city's Alternative Learning System.

Other pilot areas included barangays Guba, Duljo-Fatima, Talamban and Guadalupe.

The launching was headed by barangay captain Felix Abella and Education Committee chairman Victor Buendia.

The pilot barangays were provided with free modules for Filipino and English.

The participants were given enrollment forms and made to undergo a functional literacy test to determine their comprehension ability.

Cebu City Councilor Gerardo Carillo said the ALS will give out-of-school youth and adults an option to finish elementary and high school through informal education.

ALS is also open to all City Hall employees who want to finish elementary and high school education.

There are 411 employees of the Cebu City government who expressed their desire to register for the ALS.

Those who want to take the ALS Accreditation and Equivalency test may register in their barangays on August. The A&E allows out-of-school youth and adults to get certificates deemed comparable to the elementary certificate and secondary diploma.
