Schoolchildren are expected to spend their summer vacation playing kites thus, the Visayas Electric Company (Veco) is intensifying its information drive on kite flying this summer.

Injuries and even deaths mostly occur when people's kites get entangled in electric wires.

As part of the drive, Veco has scattered posters in areas all over Metro Cebu where there are Veco power lines to remind the people of the dangers of kite flying.

Veco will also run radio and TV ads as part of the information campaign.

The Cebu City government, through City Ordinance 1471, prohibits the flying of kites in open spaces less than 3,000 square meters and only if there are no electric or telephone poles in the vicinity.

Unless administered by an adult, children less than 12 years old are not allowed to fly kites.

Violators shall either pay a fine of P200 or be imprisoned for five days or suffer both.

The city government came up with the ordinance in recognition of Veco’s information campaign on kite flying.
