Anti-Filipino graffiti slams Fil-Ams; police probing it as hate crime

UNION CITY, California–A vandal or vandals defaced Filipino-American establishments over the weekend by spraying graffiti anti-Filipino messages, and police are investigating the case as a hate crime.

UnionCityPatch.com http://unioncity.patch.com/, a hyperlocal news site reported that those targeted were the Toppings Too restaurant, the Filipino Advocates for Justice office and the Filipino Community of Alvarado and Vicinity building, which houses various offices including the Union City Chamber of Commerce.

The pieces of graffiti appear to be written in the same handwriting. Though the identity of the perpetrator is unknown, the graffiti appears to name two ethnic groups.

On the Filipino Community building, located at 3939 Smith St., the vandal crossed out “Filipino” and wrote “Mex” above the word “community,” with “f— Filipinos” underneath.

Similarly, the graffiti scrawled on Toppings read “Mex” and “f—- Filipinos” on one side of the restaurant’s entrance door with “AMS” on the other, suggesting possible tensions after the renaming of Alvarado Middle School after Filipino-American labor leaders Larry Itliong and Philip Veracruz.

Members of the Filipino-American community were saddened to see such divisive messages in the community.

Tracie Noriega, a member of the New Haven Pilipino American Society for Education, said in a statement that the acts of vandalism are “extremely disheartening.”

“It is also disheartening that the vandalism is claimed by and against two ethnic groups that have roots in very similar experiences,” Noriega added.

“The formation of the United Farm Workers Union was grounded in inter-ethnic solidarity to fight oppression. It was in the spirit of unification that the Mexican and Filipino Farm Workers struck together for better working conditions. As a Filipino-American community, we continue to stand with all of our neighbors in peace and unity.”

Christopher Cara of the Filipino Advocates for Justice echoed similar sentiments.

“The best thing we can do is move forward in the spirit of building,” he said.

“Graffiti that incenses any group by race constitutes a hate crime,” said Cmdr. Ben Horner of the UCPD.

According to Horner, a hate crime is a felony and could be punished with civil fines and prison terms, depending on how much vandalism occurs.

Meanwhile, the Union City Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact Union City police at 510-471-1365. Anonymous tips can be left at 510-675-5207 or by e-mailing tips@unioncity.org.

    sinusuka na ang mga pinoy sa ibang bansa;
    maging sa usa, middle-east, singapore, china, europe, atbp;
    papano kasi mga kabayan natin nagiging
    hambog, abusado, maiingay, marumi, overacting,
    higit sa lahat marami ang perverts.
    langit ng mga bading ang middle east at san francisco;
    kaya tingin ng arabo sa lahat ng pinoy ay bading.

    • Yxon

      huwag naman ganyan kabayan….it would be the reverse….these OFW’s are even the vital cog and big assistance in the growth of the developing and even the developed nations….even the lowly DH are essentials to these nations… take away the OFW’s in the Arab nations and seee how it will function effectively…there are those kind of what you had mentioned but these are a very small percentage of the lot..and they are mostly present in countries where regulations are loosely enforced ….our OFWs are law abiding immigrants and worker even in the strictest of these countries…

      bwahahaha…. obvious ba……hahrhhhahaa…

      Bakit mo naman nilalahat. Marami ding marangal at iginagalang na mga Filipinos sa bansang inilahad mo. Mga doctors, engineers, those who work in banks, big foreign companies (many of them are young women) etc.

      Marami din kasing mga Arabo mahilig sa bading kaya ganyan ang paniniwala nila.

      The way you express yourself, buti na lang wala ka sa ibang bansa, kasama ka na rin seguro dun sa mga sinsuka na sinasabi mo.

    The face of America is changing, pumapangit na.
    Before when you say America, you imagine a beautiful blonde lady.
    That’s why it is called America the beautiful.

    Now with too many filipinos, it’s getting ugly.
    You see filipinos saying they are American citizens but pango, pandak.
    Not only that America the Land of milk and honey is becoming land of patis, tilapia and toyo.

        i have yet to hear of anyone attacking the philippines embassy in america, or burning the philippines flag,, and carrying banners crying about imperial philippines. if people want to see racism read some of the comments in these forums about white azz americans japos dirty brits , and the list goes on. . in america people can sue for millions if they are harassed because of racism. try it here when even the newspapers print stories about imperial americans. a foreigner cant even blow his nose without it being in a dozen newspapers the next day…

      • Simplify1

        what’s new? Americans particularly the head of state meaning the president is burnt in effigy on a daily basis all over the world! Don’t single out the philippines because the philippines is the least dangerous country to the US and its citizens…

      Have you been denied a US visa? You are jealous of our compatriots living in the USA. I’m not sure if you are serious when you say “Before when you say America, you imagine a beautiful blonde lady.” America is beautiful not because of the “blonde lady” but because USA, the country, is beautiful. And, indeed, there so many beautiful places in the USA that is unique. For example, the Bryce Canyon in Utah is a marvel, Yellow Stone park in Wyoming is another one. Central park in New York City is also very nice.

    Simple lang yan! Let the Graffiti writers punish by giving them jobs like painting public highways,traffic signs and government buildings!

  • tra6Gpeche

    Even, now, in America, this hate crime is to be expected. Not everyone in America is fairminded, not ignorant and not racist. You can mostly find these Americans in the Midwest. What is suprising is this happens in Union City, CA where people are more informed, more diversed and more tolerant. If this vandalism is due to envy and jealousy, then it means that the Filipino community in America is progressing.

  • boybakal

    Hate crime towards filipinos….I don’t think so.
    Hate crime is one where a race is threatened by another race because they are either superior or better than the other.
    Just like the Jews, they were a threat to Nazi Germans, so they exterminated to prevent propagation.
    Just like the blacks, they were physically superior that’s why the whites hated them then.
    In short, hate crimes is a hate towards another to prevent one for being dominant.

    In case of filipinos, there is no hate crime.
    We have nothing to offer, nothing superior.
    No threat….we are hated only because of our ugliness in the country of beautiful.

    I think americans should define hate crime more.
    In filipino lingo, there are many meanings of hate crime.
    Either, asar ang mukha crime, takaw bugbog crime, nakakagigil crime.
    As to this hate crime….maybe a nakakaasar ang mukha ng pilipino crime is more appropriate.

    Mga kababayan, inggit lang yan, plain and simple.
    Filipinos, as a group, have one of the highest socio-economic standing in the US. Highly educated, English speaking, and hard working. No wonder they are where they are in the US.
    Hindi mo maalis na may mga maiingit kaya huwag na kayong magulat sa mga bumabatikos sa mga Pilipino. Inggit lang sila.
