MANILA, Philippines—A Filipino construction worker in death row in Saudi Arabia for murder has been given a few more months to pay the 4 million riyals (about P44 million) blood money to the family of his landlord whom he killed in 2009, Malacañang said Thursday.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Joselito Zapanta was given until Nov. 3 this year to pay the blood money to the family of his victim, quoting the Department of Foreign Affairs.

“This extension [of the deadline from March 12 to Nov. 3] allows the Zapanta family more time to raise the funds required by the victim’s heirs,” Lacierda said.

Malacañang thanked Saudi King Abdullah and the Saudi government for interceding on Zapanta’s behalf following requests from President Aquino and Vice President Jejomar Binay.

In March, Abdullah ordered the deferment of the execution of prisoners with death sentences in the Arab country, including Zapanta. TJ A. Burgonio

paano kung talaga guilty? parang lumalabas ayos lang gumawa ng krimen sa abroad dahil tinutubos naman ng gobyerno

Guilty or not, since the government is ‘handling’ this case and to give him the benefit of the doubt, why doesn’t the government pay for the blood money to save a life? Believe me, if I win the lotto jackpot, I’ll pay for the balance. Better if the guy’s family wins.

I don’t support the death penalty but why don’t you give the money to one of the 10,000 families that are the victims of murder each year in PH?

It’s a great idea. All lotto wins should by law be deducted 20 percent for this type of national emergencies! In every case, I hope that this man collects the ransom money on time. The whole world ought to organize a collection, for after all, we are humans first, before our ethnic and national origins and differences!

Rules are rules. If the guy is convicted beyond reasonable doubt, he deserves the punishment. Same as if it were here. I can donate for the coffin.

La vida es más importante que el dinero..

In my Opinion, if it’s really expensive for the Philippine Government to Save Joselito Zapanta and Other OFWs in Saudi Arabia, then why should the government will continue opening the Gate for Filipino to work in Saudi Arabia?

Philippine Nationals are the usual victims of the common abuses in Saudi Arabia particularly Rape and other sexual abuses plus a very low salary. If you will interview these Filipinos in Jail, they have almost uniform answer “Self Protection” from abusing employers who wants to sexually abuse them. (Let me explain further.. In Saudi Arabia common victims of sexual abuses are not just women but also Men. Men who refused to be sexually abused would usually end up killing their employer. The Sad thing for OFW men is their Saudi men employers will sexually abuse them not their women boss)

I think if the Government will use some of the OWWA fund to establish some manufacturing plants to create jobs for returning OFWs or to limit the Filipino migration to Saudi Arabia or other dangerous countries in the Middle East then I think it could be more effective way because it’s hard to abruptly stop the becoming culture of Millions of Filipinos to work in Saudi Arabia. Our goal must be the future Filipinos. A long term goal for “Job Availability” for all Filipinos in their homeland.

La vida es más importante que el dinero … fondo en OWWA es tan abundante, pero OFW no se benefició de dicho a fondo.

Loreto, no offense intended, but why can’t you write in English, or Spanish, or Italian, or French, which many of us understand? I gather that you are for a death penalty. If so, I tell you as a Catholic theologian, you are wrong! All life belongs to God, born and unborn!

An eye for an eye, death for death. If the court finds the accuse guilty beyond reasonable doubt then let justice prevail. But Penoy should lend assistance to extend his life until after election. NO head cutting on election season.
