California city launches anti-bigotry campaign

AMERICAN CANYON, California–The rallying public signs “We (heart) Everyone in AmCan” are sprouting like mushrooms in residential front lawns and in neighborhoods in this city.
The signage campaign was launched after the City Council passed a resolution last month “to officially celebrate and embrace all members of our community,” according to Deanna Parness of the City Manager’s office. The resolution came as a result of news that a Filipino family in American Canyon received a hate letter, which made headlines in the Bay Area.
“The signs are aimed as a goodwill message rejecting bigotry and embracing diversity and celebrating all community members in this city regardless of race, religion and other kind of differences,” said Anthony Quicho, president of the FilAm of American Canyon, the largest Filipino American organization in this city of 20,000. More than 30 percent of residents are of Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicities.
“The FilAm of AmCan is vigorously participating in this campaign by the city and sponsoring the fabrication of many of the signs,” he pointed out
Cherry Diaz of the city’s Vintage Subdivision, welcomes the sign campaign. “As a Hispanic American, I have grown to love the diversity of the population in American Canyon. The wide variety of cultures enriches us all,” she said.
American Canyon City Hall has put out word on the availability of the free front yard or window signs.
“Residents can just stop by for the free signs at the City Manager’s Office at American Canyon City Hall at 4381 Broadway,” Parness said.
She added that those who need several signs for their church or organizations or, for some reason, may not be able to go to City Hall can call 707-647-5305 and arrange for delivery.
