LOS ANGELES, California – A non-profit group promoting migrant rights asked the producer of “American Idol” on Friday (Saturday in Manila) to reveal how many votes were cast for each of the top two finalists “in the spirit of transparency and public trust.”

“We deserve to know the entire process, including the information as to how the board of auditors conduct(ed) the tallying of scores,” said the Washington DC-based Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC) in a letter to Nigel Lythgoe, executive producer of the top-rated reality singing competition.

MHC demanded a tally of the record-breaking 132 million votes cast by phone, text and online for Filipino-Mexican Jessica Sanchez of California and Phillip Phillips of Georgia.

The letter, dated May 25, was signed by MHC executive directors Arnedo Valera, Grace Valera-Jaramillo and Jesse Gatchalian.

Phillips won “American Idol” on Wednesday, becoming the fifth male singer in a row to take the title and a guaranteed recording contract. He beat Sanchez, who was thought to have the edge after dominating social media and Twitter mentions in the last few days.

MHC, a nonprofit organization that promotes cultural diversity, actively campaigned for Sanchez.

What is wrong with the picture here?

The last time I checked those tallying the votes for American Idol was not or will never be Garcillano and his Comelec backdoor operators.

Utang na loob ho mga Migrant Heritage Council, stop the foolishness and embarrassing us, this is not the Philippine election where cheating is rampant. This is American Idol, LOL……

First of all, JS is not a migrant. She was born and raised in the US. She’s American. This is such a disgrace. OMG. You are embarrassing not just Jessica but the whole country! I can’t believe this. Here’s the email of Migrant Heritage Commission. Knock some sense in them by sending them an email.

i dont doubt that philip won because the same segment that made the previous guys win is the same formidable segment that made philip won. however the fact just surfaced that kids did not have their voice heard. it seems they were excluded from voting and are suffering heartbreak because of the results. so i would like to propose equal voting rights for the kids! why not pursue this line instead mhc…

ano ba yan… pati sa US dinala ang ugali.. naku… nakakahiya.

  • CJJ12

Nah, I don’t think so. This will make us look like sore losers. You want to be heard? Here’s a thought: don’t watch A.I. anymore. When the ratings come tumbling down, as has already been happening, then the producer will be more forthcoming, transparency in the voting process included.
