US OKs transfer of 2nd warship to Philippines

US Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Andrew Shapiro makes his opening statement prior to a roundtable discussion with a select group of journalists Friday in Makati City. AP

MANILA, Philippines—A senior US official said Congress has approved the transfer of a second Coast Guard ship to the Philippines as Washington deepens its military ties with the Southeast Asian nation that has been engaged in a territorial spat with China.

Assistant US Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Andrew Shapiro also promised to consider a Philippine request to have the warship turned over with as much military equipment as possible.

He told reporters Friday that the ship is just one of many defense needs that the US is extending to the Philippines to help its defense treaty ally build up its navy.

He ruled out any intention to re-establish US bases, a sensitive issue in the former American colony.

oi, faith diao, you should stfu and go back to china. we don’t need your communist kind here. wala na kayong ginawa kundi manggulo. it’s no wonder why the biggest drug labs e laging mga chinese nationals nag-ooperate. katulad na lang yung na-raid na shabu lab recently sa ayala-alabang. or does china wants us to be dependent to them by drugging us?

we received a freebie na nga, di pa kayo makuntento.or maybe if china donated some warships maybe you will rejoice and sing praises(or not).

I would really appreciate if the DFA and the Philippine military attache working to gain this piece of technology to make an effort to keep all the armaments of the original cutters, it may be fast, but once it has to face a real threat in a stand off, how can it defend itself in a duel? without the Harpoon anti-ship missile and The Phalanx CIWS anti-ship missile defense system and it`s anti-submarine warfare capability this ship is a sitting duck if cornered.

The government should also issue the FIM-92 Stinger a personal portable infrared homing surface to air missile (SAM) to the defenders of our island territories in there, and for our sitting duck oil platforms as well as part of defensive armaments for our other vintage vessels such as the landing craft or transport vessels.

they have submarines secretly plying the deep part of West Philippines sea from Palawan side to Zambales..so any ships in there can be threatened in time by it…and we need an anti submarine or submarines too which the US can provide by their Arleigh Brke class destroyers and submarine base in Palawan and in Cagayan area. We need the AN/TPS-59(V)3 defense radar it is a highly mobile, all solid-state, three-dimensional (3-D) radar for long-range aircraft and tactical ballistic missile detection and tracking which can aid our future jet fighters, fixed and moblie land based missile defesive batteries and missile frigates in self-defense during warfare..it has a 500 mile wide sweep each. We need a fixed and mobile missile defense shield to rain down on any frigates that will attempt to attack our forces. This can be a deterrent, but it`s better to bring in the US to keep the Chinese to think twice…it is just waiting to take the right move and will again go into creeping invasion when we are least attentive.
