MANILA, Philippines–The Philippines will send a 34-member delegation to compete in next month’s 10th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Skills Competition in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) chose 18 competitors and 16 coaches for the biennial international competition— considered the Olympic Games of skills—from among top performers in technical-vocational (tech-voc) contests in the local, regional and national levels conducted by the agency.

According to Tesda Director General Joel Villanueva, “The Asean Skills Competition provides an opportunity not just for the tech-voc trainees and coaches, but for the country’s technical-vocational education and training sector, to shine on a prestigious international platform.”

He added: “Through their skills and hard work, our tech-voc graduates in the country and abroad have proven that Filipinos are world-class workers.”

Villanueva said the skills competition, to be held in Vietnam from Oct. 19 to 29, will showcase Tesda’s next generation of quality trainees ready to take on jobs anywhere in the world.

The country’s representatives to the competition were selected by Tesda’s national organizing committee and were made to undergo three weeks of rigorous training under industry experts. The coaches for the delegation were tapped based on their technical expertise, integrity and experience in international skills competitions.

The chosen participants for the regionwide contest will pit their skills against nearly 300 competitors from 9 other Asean member-countries.
